How Candleman was created.

I started my artisan candle company many years ago, I wanted a point of difference through the scents and materials used. They are hundreds upon hundreds of different candle brands, with candles selling from as little as a few pounds at discount supermarkets to over one hundred pounds for a candle like Jo Malone. But I had never found a candle company that offered a range of innovative scents at a competitive price that weren’t saccharin sweet or floral. I also found that most candle companies were using chemicals in the wax such as petroleum. It seems crazy that people are burning candles for hours in their homes with this toxic chemical filling the air. And it’s these candles with artificial scents like ‘Snowflake Kisses’ or Vanilla Cupcake’ that supermarkets, discount and department stores usually promote on price.

So, after many, many failed attempts and thousands of pounds invested, I eventually discovered a plant base wax made of coconut and rapeseed, which was a complete game changer for me and a bit of a light bulb moment. Not only does this beautiful wax give a smoother, creamier finish, with no added chemicals, it doesn’t interfere with the hand-blended scent oils I create. Adding natural cotton wicks to our candles means they draw up the fragrances effortlessly and this too reduces sooting. I used to experience this myself with other candle brands when they left black soot marks on the walls. I even once tried to wash the soot marks from my wall and ended up having to re-decorate the room. ‘Never again’, I said to myself.

Once I’d created what I consider to be the perfect candle, I started experimenting with different vessels. After many years of research, trial and error, I decided to use amber glass containers which can be fully recycled. I wanted to make sure that my packaging wasn’t going to let me down, so I avoided using plastic packaging from day one. I’m really pleased to say that over the years, I’ve grown in knowledge and experience. I’m proud that we’re a completely plastic free company, that only uses recycled and compostable cardboard, dissolvable packing chips and paper gum tape. Protecting our environment should be the number one focus for any business, large or small, in today’s world.

Our candle collection has slowly built up over the years and I try to craft fragrances for different seasons and reflections. I truly believe that the power of scent is extraordinarily evocative, affecting how you feel, think, or reminisce of lovingly memories from the past.
